Saints Row: The Third
Saints Row: The Third is the first Saints Row game that takes place in the city of Steelport. Much like the first two games, the story revolves around the Saints destroying and absorbing three rival gangs, taking over the city in the process. In Saints Row: The Third, these three gangs are the Morningstar, the Luchadores, and the Deckers. Unlike the first two games, these three gangs are all controlled by a criminal organization known as The Syndicate, which the saints must also deal with.
What it feels like
Gleeful disrespect and mischievous humor puncture every serious moment; the game revels in absurdist excess and taboo-breaking. High-energy joy and unbridled enthusiasm infuse the presentation, characters, and wildly colorful scenarios throughout. Mischievous teasing fun and invitation to mess around—stunts, customization, and absurd side missions encourage experimentation.
What it's about
Criminal gangs, gang warfare, and organized crime syndicates form the entire thematic and narrative backbone. Sharp social commentary and parody of crime fiction, pop culture, and corporate excess throughout the narrative and missions. The bonds and camaraderie between the Saints crew drive character arcs and emotional beats throughout the story.
How it plays
Third-person shooter gunplay with aiming and firing is the core combat interaction throughout. Driving and vehicle control are a core traversal and combat system; racing and vehicle destruction feature prominently. Character customization options—appearance, clothing, stat allocation—allow players to tailor their saint to different playstyles.
How it looks and sounds
The camera follows the player character from behind as the standard perspective for combat and exploration. Saturated, bold color palette—neon, gang colors, and eye-searing aesthetics define the visual identity of Steelport.
How it's structured
A large continuous city (Steelport) is freely explorable with minimal gating, allowing the player to tackle objectives in largely non-linear fashion. Player agency is central—the game encourages emergent play, side activities, and freedom to pursue optional chaos in addition to story missions. Built as a complete single-player campaign with a full story arc, though multiplayer options are also present.
