Scanner Sombre

2017Introversion SoftwarePC (Microsoft Windows), Mac

Inspired by Gone Home and Dear Esther, Scanner Sombre is a cave exploration experience. With stunning visuals and a terrifying theme, it is the 6th major video game released by Introversion Software.

What it feels like

Darkness as 'greatest foe' and haunting atmosphere build slow anticipatory fear of unseen dangers rather than immediate threat. Solo cave exploration in total darkness creates pervasive isolation and solitude in a vast, empty underground space. Revealed wireframe geometry and fragmentary LIDAR imagery creates subtly wrongness in the visual presentation of the familiar made strange.

What it's about

Explicitly framed as 'horror' in genres and described with 'terrifying theme' and 'haunting experience.' Steam tags include 'Psychological Horror' and the design uses darkness, isolation, and atmospheric dread rather than jumpscares as primary horror vectors. Solo descent into an underground abyss emphasizes isolation from the world above and other people.

How it plays

Core interaction revolves around using the LIDAR scanner to illuminate and reveal hidden cave features and objects in darkness. Learning to read LIDAR data and navigate the revealed cave geometry involves puzzle-like spatial reasoning.

How it looks and sounds

Steam tags and description confirm first-person perspective as the primary viewpoint for exploration. LIDAR scanner reveals only wireframe geometry in darkness, creating a sparse, essential visual language rather than detailed textures. Core aesthetic depends on stark contrast between darkness and revealed wireframe illumination.
