Assassin's Creed Rogue
Assassin's Creed Rogue is a 2014 action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Sofia and published by Ubisoft. It is the seventh major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, and is set between 2012's Assassin's Creed III and 2013's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. It also has ties to Assassin's Creed Unity, which was released on the same day as Rogue. It is the last Assassin's Creed game to be developed for the seventh generation of consoles, being released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November 2014 and for Windows in March 2015.
What it feels like
The narrative emphasizes moral complexity and the 'darkest chapter,' with a grave tone around Shay's transformation and betrayal. Shay's journey involves both the thrill of power and the sorrow of losing his former identity and brotherhood. The moral weight of Shay's choices and internal conflict is played with sincere emotional stakes.
What it's about
Set in a grounded historical period (colonial America, 1752-1760s) with authentic locations and era texture. Shay's arc is explicitly about defection and redemption through becoming an Assassin Hunter, seeking to atone for past misdeeds. The core conceit of covert infiltration, disguise, and intelligence gathering drives the Assassin fantasy.
How it plays
Avoiding detection and reading patrol patterns is a fundamental pillar of Assassin's Creed gameplay, enabling silent eliminations. Free-running and traversal across cities and wilderness is deeply embedded in the gameplay loop. Close-quarters combat against guards and enemies is a core interaction option when stealth fails.
How it looks and sounds
The camera follows the protagonist from behind or an over-the-shoulder perspective, standard for the series. Main characters and story beats are fully voiced, with extensive dialogue throughout the campaign. Historical locations rendered with high-fidelity detail aiming for visual authenticity and immersion.
How it's structured
Designed as a single-player experience with no multiplayer component at its core. A bounded, authored story arc following Shay's transformation from Assassin to Assassin Hunter with a definite narrative end. The game features a large continuous space across New York City, river valleys, and northern waters explorable in a largely non-linear player-chosen order, central to the AC formula.
