Audiosurf

2008Dylan FittererPC (Microsoft Windows)

Audiosurf is a puzzle/rhythm hybrid game created by Invisible Handlebar, a personal company created by Dylan Fitterer. It's track-like stages visually mimic the music the player chooses, while the player races across several lanes collecting colored blocks that appear in sync with the music. The music used in the game is chosen from the user's own library, from almost any DRM-free format, as well as standard redbook CDs; in addition, Audiosurf includes the entire soundtrack to The Orange Box as part of the download.

What it feels like

Fast-paced block collection and lane-switching create kinetic flow and rush, especially as songs build in intensity. The game invites experimentation with different songs and casual, stress-free enjoyment of one's own music library.

How it plays

Actions must align with musical beats and tempo; the entire game is built around rhythmic synchronization with the player's chosen songs. The core gameplay loop is matching and collecting colored blocks in sync with the music, making pattern-matching central to moment-to-moment play. The player 'rides' across a music-visualizing track, moving forward at a pace determined by the music, evoking a vehicle or lane-based traversal.

How it's structured

Each song the player selects generates a unique procedurally-created track layout, speed, and visual pattern based on the audio data. The game's core mechanic is that players use their own music library to endlessly generate new, unique tracks, making replay value essentially unlimited. Primary mode is single-player riding and scoring, though local co-op exists as a secondary feature.
