Half-Life: Alyx
Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Alyx Vance and her father Eli mount an early resistance to the Combine's brutal occupation of Earth.
What it feels like
Sustained edge-of-seat pressure where mistakes against the Combine feel costly and imminent. An unflinching dark tone depicting brutal alien occupation and humanity's desperate struggle. Despite overwhelming odds, Alyx and Eli represent humanity's persisting will to fight and resist.
What it's about
The Combine invasion and alien occupation of Earth anchor the entire setting in speculative sci-fi. Humanity survives amid ruins and brutal alien occupation, though not a total collapse. Armed resistance and combat against an occupying alien force frame the conflict.
How it plays
Shooting and aiming ranged weapons against the Combine is the core moment-to-moment interaction throughout the campaign. Puzzle-solving woven into the environment and combat scenarios is a significant secondary pillar alongside shooting. Avoiding detection via sound, shadow, and patrol awareness is a meaningful tactical option.
How it looks and sounds
The entire game is experienced directly through Alyx's eyes in first-person perspective, fundamental to VR immersion. VR rendering aims for high-fidelity realism to maximize immersion in the alien-occupied Earth. Immersive diegetic sound design in VR amplifies tension and atmosphere of the Combine occupation.
How it's structured
Designed exclusively for solo play with no multiplayer component, focused on a personal narrative campaign. A bounded authored story arc following Alyx's resistance fight from beginning to end. Linear story spine with wide explorable spaces and optional content rather than purely constrained level progression.
