Hardspace: Shipbreaker
Welcome to LYNX, the galaxy’s leading ship-salvaging corporation! Across your career, you’ll have the privilege of paying your debt to us by purchasing salvaging rights to increasingly large and valuable ships. Cut them open and extract as much value as possible!
What it feels like
The methodical, puzzle-like work of careful ship disassembly encourages deliberate, reflective play rather than frantic action. Despite work pressure, the gameplay loop encourages calm, patient methodical work rather than high-stress urgency.
What it's about
The game is fundamentally set in a far-future sci-fi universe with space salvaging, corporate debt servitude, and advanced technology as core world-building. Debt servitude to LYNX Corp, the pursuit of profit, and exploitation of labor form the satirical backdrop of the setting. The oppressive corporate structure forcing workers into debt bondage presents an dystopian labor scenario.
How it plays
Managing salvaged materials, upgrading equipment, and paying off debt form the central loop of maximizing value extraction and resource budgeting. Cutting and manipulating ship structures relies on real-time physics simulation for momentum, orientation, and material interaction. Upgrading salvaging gear from gathered materials is a primary progression mechanic that gates access to larger ships.
How it looks and sounds
Gameplay is experienced entirely from the player's first-person perspective as they operate salvaging equipment. Ship interiors and salvaging equipment are rendered with realistic lighting and material detail supporting immersion.
How it's structured
Each ship is an open problem space where the player chooses salvage order and approach with few imposed constraints beyond physics. Play is structured as discrete salvage contracts with varying ship types and difficulty tiers.
