Hitman
Hitman is a stealth game and the sixth mainline entry in the Hitman franchise, serving as the first installment of the World of Assassination trilogy. Players control the genetically engineered assassin Agent 47 from a third-person perspective as he carries out contract killings across large, open-ended sandbox levels set in locations around the globe including Paris, Italy, Morocco, Bangkok, Colorado, and Japan. Each level presents numerous approaches to eliminating targets, from disguises and environmental manipulation to staged accidents and direct confrontation. The game features a classless system where players unlock new tools, starting locations, and gear by completing challenges. Originally released episodically, the game was later delisted from standalone sale in 2023 when IO Interactive consolidated the trilogy under a single package titled Hitman: World of Assassination.
What it's about
Organized assassination, contract killings, and the criminal underworld are the central setting and subject. Gathering intelligence on targets, their routines, vulnerabilities, and environment parallels investigative work before executing the contract.
How it plays
Avoiding detection through shadow and sound is the canonical core of Hitman's design, with multiple approaches built around never alerting guards. Disguises allow blending into crowds and roles to hide in plain sight, a central mechanic for navigating levels undetected. Enemy line-of-sight, hearing, and alertness states are core to stealth tension, forcing the player to read patrol patterns and sight lines.
How it looks and sounds
The third-person camera following Agent 47 is the standard view for traversal, stealth, and interaction throughout the game. Realistic environments with worn detail—offices, gardens, streets—ground the assassination scenarios in grimy, high-detail realism.
How it's structured
Each level is a systemic play space with minimal imposed objectives; players set their own approach and goal paths within the assassination target. Designed to be played solo with no multiplayer component; the narrative and sandbox are entirely single-player focused. Large, continuous, explorable levels in Paris, Bangkok, Colorado, and other global locations are explored in largely non-linear, player-chosen order.
