Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak
Before you can find your Homeworld, you must first unlock the secrets of the desert. Blackbird Interactive and Gearbox Software invite you to visit the deserts of Kharak in this new Homeworld story, where danger lurks behind every dune. Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is set for release on January 20th on Windows PC. The planet is dying, but deep in the southern sands of Kharak, an anomaly has been discovered. Could Kharak’s salvation lie in the desert? Led by chief science officer Rachel S’jet, the Coalition of the Northern Kiithid sends an expedition deep within enemy-controlled territory to investigate the finding, which could forever alter the fate of humanity.
What it feels like
The narrative treats the existential stakes of a dying world and desperate expedition with sincere dramatic weight. Described as danger lurking behind every dune, the gameplay carries sustained tactical pressure and threat. The anomaly in the desert and its unknown significance drive curiosity and questions about what lies ahead.
What it's about
The Homeworld universe's far-future setting with advanced technology and interstellar civilization anchors the entire narrative and world. The dying planet and the necessity of the expedition to find salvation establish survival of humanity as a central thematic concern. The expedition into dangerous enemy territory to uncover salvation echoes the structure of a heroic mission.
How it plays
Real-time command of fleets and units across the desert battlefield is the definitive core gameplay loop. RTS gameplay typically permits pausing to issue orders, a standard feature of real-time strategy games. Enemy awareness, patrol routes, and line-of-sight are tactical considerations in navigating dangerous territory.
How it looks and sounds
Modern 3D rendering with detailed desert environments and realistic visual presentation of vehicles and terrain. RTS games typically employ adaptive soundtracks that respond to combat intensity and mission state.
How it's structured
A bounded story arc following the expedition led by Rachel S'jet to investigate the anomaly with a clear narrative progression. Campaign-focused single-player experience with story-driven missions is the primary mode, though multiplayer is available. Campaign missions progress through a story spine with tactical flexibility within each operation rather than pure linear stages.
