Sea of Thieves

2018RareXbox Series X|S, PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 5, Xbox One

Sea of Thieves is a first-person multiplayer action-adventure game in which players take on the role of pirates exploring an open world ocean. Crews of one to four players operate sloop, brigantine, or galleon ships cooperatively, completing voyages for various trading companies, hunting for treasure, battling skeleton forts, and encountering other player crews who may form alliances or attack. The game features a cosmetics-only progression system, meaning all players have equal gameplay capabilities regardless of experience level.

How it plays

Operating and maintaining sloops, brigantines, and galleons with crew coordination is the primary mode of traversal and interaction. Finding and securing randomized treasure, chests, and loot is the core reward loop driving voyages and raids. Muskets, cannons, and ranged combat are core to both naval and boarding encounters.

How it looks and sounds

The player experiences the world directly from a first-person perspective aboard ships and during exploration. A sweeping orchestral score reinforces the epic pirate-adventure tone throughout exploration and combat. Ocean water, lighting, and environmental detail aim for high-fidelity realism rather than stylization.

How it's structured

A large continuous ocean world is freely explorable in non-linear order, with dynamic encounters replacing scripted progression. Teams of 1-4 players cooperate over the internet toward shared voyage objectives and treasure hunts. Direct player-versus-player combat and crew battles are a core system; crews raid and betray each other for loot and dominance.
