Limbo is a black and white puzzle-platforming adventure. Players take the role of a young boy traveling through an eerie and treacherous world in an attempt to discover the fate of his sister.

What it feels like

A slow-building sense of anticipatory fear pervades the world; danger feels imminent though not always immediately visible. The monochromatic, silent world with strange creatures and logic feels subtly, disturbingly wrong. A pervasive wistful sadness underlies the boy's journey to find his sister, with hints of loss and isolation.

What it's about

Unraveling the fate of the boy's sister and understanding the nature of Limbo itself structures the experience. A long, transformative traversal through a hostile world seeking reunion drives the narrative spine. Solitude and being cut off from the world is central to the atmosphere and the boy's experience.

How it plays

Jumping and navigating hazardous geometry across the environment is a core challenge throughout. Puzzles consistently require manipulating simulated physics—pushing boxes, triggering gravity shifts, and interacting with environmental forces. Puzzles are woven into and solved using the game world itself, from moving platforms to interactive mechanisms.

How it looks and sounds

The game's defining visual identity is its stark black-and-white palette, rendering every environment and character exclusively in grayscale. The entire game unfolds as a 2D side-on profile view of the boy navigating left and right. The boy and most world elements read as dark silhouettes against lighter backgrounds, creating haunting visual contrast.

How it's structured

Designed exclusively for solo play with no multiplayer component. Every space is deliberately authored by designers; there is no procedural generation. Progression moves the boy through successive distinct zones or chambers in a mostly fixed order.
