Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. As investigative journalist Miles Upshur, explore Mount Massive Asylum and try to survive long enough to discover its terrible secret... if you dare.

What it feels like

A slow-building anticipatory fear pervades exploration, where discovery of terrible secrets and lurking threats create sustained unease. The crushing, suffocating atmosphere of an inescapable asylum presses onto the player throughout exploration. A pervasive solitude defines the experience as Miles navigates hostile spaces with only a camera and his wits.

What it's about

The horror roots itself in the player's mind through atmospheric tension, disturbing encounters, and the unreliable horror of an asylum setting rather than pure gore. Unraveling the terrible secret of Mount Massive Asylum structures the entire experience and drives progression. Frightening and disturbing the player through visceral encounters and atmospheric dread is the primary design aim.

How it plays

Avoiding detection and hiding from threats is core to survival, as the vulnerable journalist cannot fight back. Enemy awareness and line-of-sight mechanics create tension as the player must read and understand threat detection to survive. Managing limited resources (camera batteries) and staying alive against overwhelming threats is central to the survival loop.
