Battle Brothers
Battle Brothers is a turn based strategy RPG mix which has you leading a mercenary company in a gritty, low-power, medieval fantasy world. You decide where to go, whom to hire or to fight, what contracts to take and how to train and equip your men in a procedurally generated open world campaign. Do you have what it takes to lead them through bloody battles and to victory? The game consists of a strategic worldmap and a tactical combat layer. On the worldmap you can freely travel in order to take contracts that earn you good coin, find places worth looting, enemies worth pursuing or towns to resupply and hire men at. This is also where you manage, level up and equip your Battle Brothers. Once you engage a hostile party the game will switch to a tactical map where the actual fighting takes place as detailed turn based combat.
What it feels like
A harsh, unflinching low-power medieval setting that emphasizes brutality and the danger of combat without looking away.
What it's about
A grounded medieval world of mercenaries, castles, and feudal contracts forms the setting without fantasy elements. Armed mercenary warfare, recruitment, and combat operations as the core setting and activity. Permadeath and the loss of soldiers underscore the human cost of warfare and mercenary life.
How it plays
Turn-based tactical combat is the core moment-to-moment gameplay on the tactical map, with detailed positioning and action economy. Combat on a grid where positioning, range, and spacing are critical tactical decisions that determine battle outcomes. Close-quarters weapon combat with positioning and stamina management is the primary combat form.
How it looks and sounds
The tactical combat maps are rendered in an isometric three-quarter perspective for clear positioning and visibility. The game uses hand-drawn or illustrated 2D art for characters, environments, and UI with visible artistic detail.
How it's structured
Designed entirely for solo play with no multiplayer component; the campaign is a single-player experience. A procedurally generated world that you freely traverse to take contracts, find loot, and manage your company, though structured around discrete regions and returning to towns. You set your own goals within the campaign—which contracts to pursue, where to travel, whom to recruit—with minimal narrative rails guiding your choices.
