Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Choose Your Path! Set 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire, you are the last hope for the Jedi Order and the Republic - can you master the ways of the Force to become their savior? Or will you fall to the dark side and achieve ultimate power? Hero, villain, peacekeeper, or chaos-bringer... you and your party will determine the fate of the galaxy! Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a role-playing video game. Players will be able to create their own characters and be able to choose what gender, appearance, class, skills, attributes, and feats they have throughout the game - no two characters will be the same!
What it feels like
The narrative takes its themes of good versus evil and the Jedi philosophy seriously, without irony or deconstruction.
What it's about
Set in the Star Wars universe 4000 years before the Empire, the entire narrative and setting are grounded in science fiction with hyperspace, the Force, and space-faring civilizations. The core narrative frames you as the last hope of the Jedi Order on a quest to save the Republic, mirroring the classic hero's journey structure. While science-fiction framed, the Jedi-versus-Sith conflict and the temptation of dark power evokes the grim, corrupting struggle of dark fantasy.
How it plays
Combat uses a real-time-with-pause system where party actions are executed in a turn-like sequence, central to moment-to-moment gameplay. Deep customization of attributes, skills, feats, and class selection enables varied character builds and specialization paths. You assemble and direct a squad of distinct party members throughout the campaign, managing their abilities and roles in combat.
How it looks and sounds
Gameplay is presented from a third-person camera perspective following the player character.
How it's structured
Designed as a complete single-player campaign with no multiplayer component. The game delivers a bounded, authored story arc with a definite beginning, middle, and end across multiple planets. The ending diverges dramatically based on whether the player becomes a Jedi savior or falls to the dark side.
